21st Century Skills

21st Century Skills Developed In Our Project

Global Awareness: With increasing urbanization, it can be difficult for learners in these environments to have meaningful connections with the Earth and its resources. Square foot gardening will give students an opportunity to recognize that all humanity derives sustenance from the same planet and that it is worth preserving for all people.

Productivity and Accountability: Square Foot Gardening is a collaborative effort with many students being assigned specific tasks which will be conducive to the success of the whole project. This introduces an opportunity to learn how to be productive and accountable, as assigned tasks must be completed in a timely and effective manner. This skill equips students with career readiness and teamwork.

Social and Cross-Cultural Skills: A community activity like Square Foot Gardening will expose students to people of backgrounds and identities which may be different from those they are familiar with or know. Learning to engage effectively with people from these backgrounds will enable the success of the project and further success in a more cosmopolitan world.

Leadership and Responsibility: A garden of any kind contains living things which must be cared for and protected. In having a role in the creation of a garden, students will be ready to be proactive and engaged in this and other community developments. They will set examples for others and create a culture of integrity.

Health Literacy: In its preparation, students will gain a better understanding of where quality food comes from with their Square Foot Garden. In being cognizant of the conditions and nutrients necessary for cultivating robust fruits and vegetables, students may be compelled to make better health decisions today and tomorrow.
